Street Gang: The Complete History of Sesame Street
Wed., Jan. 28, 7:30pm. $5-$10. Gershman Y, 401 S. Broad St. 215.446.3021.
www.gershmany.org
Almost all the Brady Bunchers have made bank with their
not-so-wholesome memoirs, and the roof’s sure to be blown off Full
House soon. Word’s still out on those self-righteous Huxtables (they were
probably too well-behaved to warrant a big-figure book deal), but now your favorite
kid show that wasn’t Small Wonder is getting the tell-all treatment
thanks to Street Gang: The Complete History of Sesame Street by
former TV Guide editor Michael Davis. Did Mr. Hooper die of an
overdose? Was Bert bulimic? Did Linda abort Grover’s furry blue baby? Do Elmo and
Ernie do lines off the stoop with guest stars between takes? It’s more likely Davis
will address issues of infotainment and child literacy, but the
Q&A—moderated by WHYY personality Ed Cunningham—is the perfect opportunity
to ask those questions that’ve been plaguing you since you first made your way to
where the air is sweet. (Caralyn Green)
Christian Lander Wed., Jan. 28, 7pm. University of Pennsylvania Bookstore, 3601 Walnut St.
215.898.7595. stuffwhitepeoplelike.com
You’ve had ugly sweater parties, you love hummus and you listened to Del Tha Funkee
Homosapien. Be a good white person and see Christian Lander. The author of
blog-turned-book Stuff White People Like will get you over that “OMG
I’m white” hurdle and onto a more complicated racial mindset. (Becca Trabin)
Punk Rock Flea Market
Sun., Feb. 1, 10am-4pm. $3. Electric Factory, Seventh and Willow sts. 866.468.7619.
www.r5productions.com
Since the Eagles have fucked up and won’t be on the road to victory, ease your pain
with retail therapy at the Punk Rock Flea Market. Expect typical flea market items as
well as crafts and music. And for those who still give a damn about football, you’ll be
home for kick-off. (Erica Palan)
Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!
Thurs., Jan. 29, 9pm. Sold out. Theatre of the Living Arts, 334 South St.
215.922.1011. www.livenation.com
No more watching Tim and Eric’s crude, lewd, bachelor-boy humor in your footie jammies
with empty ponies at the foot of your undergrad futon. Adult Swim is taking Tim
and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job! off the telly and onto stages in 25
cities. The Temple alums have become the Cartoon Network’s biggest nighttime stars with
their public access satire, which features bare beer bellies, crusty drag get-ups and
lots of inappropriate bodily functions, as well as guest spots from David Cross, Patton
Oswalt, Rainn Wilson and regular John C. Reilly as sandwich-loving, ant-eating,
tip-giving wino Dr. Steve Brule. The Oscar-nominated “serious actor” isn’t touring with
Tim and Eric, but street puppeteer David Liebe Hart and perpetually abominable celebrity
impersonator James Quall are. Tim and Eric, you’ve come a long way from humping benches
in front of the Art Museum. (C.G.)
Greed: The Tale of Enron
Fri., Jan. 30 and Sat., Jan. 31, 8pm. $30. Prince Music Theater, 1412 Chestnut St.
215.569.9700. www.princemusictheater.org
Rebecca Davis has serious credentials. The Temple grad spent 10 months in Russia
studying arts management on a Fulbright scholarship, won a grant from Temple to found
her own nonprofit dance studio (aptly named the Rebecca Davis Dance Co.) in 2004 and has
choreographed numerous Philadelphia shows in the past five years. She hasn’t exactly
stuck to easy topics, either: A two-show run of Darfur, exploring the
genocide in Sudan, was well-received last year. This year she’s back at the Prince Music
Theater focusing on a less violent event: the collapse of energy giant Enron. Featuring
Jeffrey Skilling and Ken Lay as characters and an alt-rock soundtrack, this is one of
the least traditional things you’ll see all year. (Daniel McQuade)
