Revenge of the Nerds

Revenge of the Nerds
Regarding Steven Wells’ recent cover story about the rise of
Geekadelphia:
I’m a recent grad, intern and freelance designer by day, nerdtastic socialite at
night. Participating in events and meetups by local collectives (like Geeks Who Give,
NetSquared, 8static, Indy Hall, the Hacktory, etc.) in the last year has opened my eyes
to just how dedicated we dorks can be. I’ve found an encouraging environment (and
inspiration) in the Philly nerd scene that was not present while achieving my B.F.A.,
where we were mostly encouraged to run off to N.Y.C. with our portfolios in hand and
noses in the air.
I feel very fortunate that I’ve met such incredible people who share a common goal of
using brainpower, smarts and talents to use technology to connect creative culture, and
I would like to compliment PW for putting us on the stands. It means
that the nerds have been heard.
Great article! Living on the outskirts of Philly I wasn’t familiar with a number of
the people and groups mentioned. Just one correction. The Crayonator is 10 years old. I
know because he’s my son. We entered the Art Buggy Derby as a team. He used most of his
prize money to buy an iPod and lots of LEGOs. We can’t wait for next year’s competition.
As a dad one thing I’d like to see and hear more about is how geekiness is being
nurtured in the next generation. My son and I are doing what we can with our web show,
WREXLabs (www.wrexlabs.com). And the people at MakePhilly and the Hacktory have always
been very welcoming to us.
Thank you for writing this article! As a fellow Philly geek I’m glad to see the scene
in general get such in-depth coverage and see so many familiar names get cred.
Reading this made my week. Philly is the geekdom, and this is an article that brings
to light how much of a tech sector and talent core the city has. Philly is the real
deal, not just a few corporate walls.
Pizza Party
Regarding Adam Erace’s recent review of Earth Bread + Brewery:
I think the reviewer is penalizing the establishment because he got lost getting there
on a crappy night.
This is a gem of a place and Mt. Airy is lucky to have it. The flatbreads we sampled
(two regulars and the evening’s special) were quite good; the house beers nothing less
than I have come to expect from a brewer with Mr. Baker’s experience and skill; great
atmosphere and philosophy as easygoing as the dark mild.
I try to stop in [at Earth Bread + Brewery] every week for a pizza and whatever new
beer they have. I have been thrilled at the quality, especially the Seed Pizza. What is
most important to me is the level of conversation and discussion about the process of
making different beers. I always learn and am impressed by the desire of this couple and
staff to bring a level of education, quality and community to the Northwest.
